One of the most frequent things any web programing does is work with the MySQL database. While this can be straight forward, there are some things that can only be learned by experience. Now, there are hundreds of articles out there about php and MySQL, I feel it's important to cover a few key points that are easily overlooked, but can make for a very bad day. Several caveats exist in MySQL, php, and phpMyAdmin that just don't come up often. And some of those caveats can be far worse than it may seem. I often hear developers say "Never post process, let the database do the work for you", and while that may be good advice in the general terms, it is by no means a law. |

Page Cache version 1.0.6 has been released. A few new features were added in this version, as well as a few low and moderate level bug fixes. A few of the new features include: - Support for different languages in the administration section. Simply edit language.page_cache.php (and e-mail me the file, so others can benifit).
- Support for mod_page_cache! This module will display a button to clear the cache on the header in the administration (near the logout link). This button will work for any user who has access in the back end (so managers can reset the cache when they make changes). Managers will not be allowed into any other configuration window however.

Tips and Tricks to common Joomla problems Joomla is an amazing content management system and it does a brilliant job and tons of breaktaking websites have used Joomla as a platform. IT's never a wrong choice, as it is easy to use, configure and maintain. Not to mention it's free! But it comes with minor problems here and there (Joomla v1.0.2), which can be easily solved! They are not entirely free of minor problems. I would rather call it workarounds to futher customise this incredible piece of software. We will go through some customisation that can be done to further enhance your Joomla website.

I've been testing a new webserver on this and a few other sites for the past few months. I got tired of Apache's HUGE memory usage and lack of ability to support a load. While looking for ways to speed Apache up, I came across an interesting solution. Lighttpd (Pronounced Lite - e) was that solution. Not only is it a full featured web server like Apache, it also has an almost zero memory footprint. My server has 2 gigs of RAM, and this new server can support more than 100 times the request before even coming close to the memory limit. I'm going to talk about how I set it up on my server, and how it's helped me exceed what I ever thought possible. |
