Well, the core of the component is functional!!! There's absolutely nothing fancy in it yet (unless you consider the ability to run NATIVELY in both 1.0 and 1.5 with the same package fancy)... It's caching pages on my testbed as we speak. Here's some REALLY initial performance data with nothing but Sample data installed...
- Joomla 1.0.13
- Average Uncached Time (without component) : 0.08 seconds
- Average Cached Time (with component) : 0.04 seconds
- Joomla 1.5.0 RC1
- Average Uncached Time : 0.13 seconds
- Average Cached Time : 0.012 seconds
Things left to do
- Everything
- Build MANY modules (right now, the only modules built are the backends)
- Build Administration section
- Build installer
- Beta Test

After finding a bug with php 5.2 and above that effects PageCache, I've been pushed into developing version 2.0 sooner than I had planned. But trust me, that's not a bad thing... I've started programming the core, and it's got some interesting new features... I'll tell you what's pretty firm now, but some things may change before Beta. Right now here's what's being included:
- Native compatibility with both Joomla 1.0 and 1.5 (1.5 doesn't even need a single file to be modified!!!!)
- Extendable storage API (you can write your own storage class, so you can expand to whatever you need)
- Includes storage backends for APC, Database, File, Memcache and Xcache storage mechanisms
- More extendable "Reset Actions" plug-in interface (An actual API)
- Better support for multi-lingual backend
- Much more secure configuration system
- Optional CRON based refresh
If there is anything else you would like to see included/changed, please comment back soon, here's your chance to get your feature in there... |

As you may have seen, Joomla 1.0.13 has been released. I am pleased to announce that the current version (1.0.8) works with this version! There are still a whole lot of incompatabilities with this new version, so make sure to check the Joomla forums before upgrading, and BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP! Always BACKUP! |

Well, it's been a while since my last article/post. I must apologize for that. I was busy last week getting the new server fully functional (which it is). Not to mention the fact that I went to Canada for the weekend (I needed a vacation), and the hotel didn't even have WiFi! That annoyed me a little... Then there was a Woot-Off... For those of you that don't know, I run one of the busiest Woot Trackers on the internet. During the 2 day event, I averaged over 250 requests per second, with a peak of over 800 requests per second. That's 10 mbit on average, and over 80 mbit peak... WOW! Oh, and the best part? The 1 minute load never passed 1.5... CPU usage was under 15% the entire time. I couldn't have been happier with how it performed. If there was ANY reason to switch to Lighttpd, this was it. On another note, I've added a new small feature to the site. If you look on the upper left of the page, you'll see Featured Site. That site will change daily, and it's a site that's powered by PageCache. You have a site you want featured? Contact me for details! |
