While browsing SlashDot tonight, I came across this article on "8 Sound Reasons Not To Use MySQL."  While this article is written with enterprise databases in mind, I find that it has some inherant flaws that need to be discussed.  Don't get me wrong, the article does have a significant amount of good information in it, but a lot of what is said needs to be taken with a grain of salt.  While I do agree with the author, that MySQL shouldn't really be used in enterprise applications, I feel that the reasons he cites are somewhat weak.

The page caching component has reached over 10,000 related downloads in a month and a half!  The page cache core (component) has been downloaded over 7500 times!  The other 2500+ downloads can be attributed to mod_page_cache, plugins and languages.  I would like to thank everyone for their feedback on this component (both good and bad).  My Joomla development is being temporally put on hold while I get my new server online (including 2 new sites that are sure to be of good community use!).  That's not to say that I won't respond to support requests, just that I am not planning on future development until the project is done.  There is more to come, you can count on that!

I came across an interesting article tonight.  When I read this article, I honestly had to stop reading and wonder what is wrong with Microsoft.  The article I am referring to is Microsoft Takes On The Free World.  The short of this article is that Microsoft is looking into going after Open Source software (GNU/GPL) for patent infringement.  This is the most absurd thing I have ever heard!  Due to the license, distributors cannot be held liable for the applications.  This means that the only people Microsoft can go after, is the end user.  We are talking about IBM, SUN, Red Hat, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, AIG Technologies, HSBC, Wal-Mart, Dell and Reed Elsevier and more.  Only one thing comes to mind.  Microsoft is scared!

As you may have gathered, I've been pushing Lighttpd as the better webserver for a while now.  I've finally taken the time to actually gather numbers to support that!  In this article, I'm going to cover the performance difference between Lighttpd 1.4.14 and Apache 2.2.4 when dealing with static files.  All displayed data is straight from Excel (exported from WebLOAD), with no tweaking.  These are the raw numbers (posted as graphs).
