Ok, I don't claim to be a legal expert, but recent proceedings with Microsoft over their software patents have really got me wondering the legality and morality of software patents. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that all software needs to be open source, but do they need a patent? A compiled release (under most circumstances) can only be reverse engineered by a programmer who could write the entire software anyway (Since it would need to be built from scratch anyway). What justifies a patent anyway? |

Microsoft recently announced their latest product, named Surface. For those of you who haven’t heard, this new computer is actually a coffee table with a multi-touch screen on the top. That's it. No keyboard, no mouse, no USB cables. Just a screen. This latest bit of hardware runs on Microsoft’s newest operating system, (albeit highly modified) Vista. Now, for those of you who have read my works before, you can tell that I am not a Microsoft fan to begin with, but this thing is interesting! If Surface takes off (and not only takes off, but works as well as it needs to), it will change computing forever. |

It's been a little over a month since the last version of Page Cache, and the newest version has just been released. Version 1.0.8 adds the most requested feature I have heard: Unlimited cache life... A few security holes have been patched (all minor), a few minor bugs have been fixed. Gzip page compression has been fixed for cached pages (uncached pages still are not gziped). Performance seems to have been improved a little too! Thanks for all your donations and comments, without either, I wouldn't have made it this far!!! |

I've been asked by a number of people "How much does page cache help?" While I have been able to answer that it does speed things up, it has always bugged me on why some users get a GREAT performance gain, and others only a slight gain. So today, I ran some queries across three live sites that I have PageCache running on (On The Web, BagsOfCrap, and NBVFC). Now, you need to note that all three of these sites are running the same server, and are running the same version of Joomla. Each is running a pretty simular set of components (Joomlaboard, OpenSEF, Community Builder), but has different main components (NBVFC's main part is a gallery2 Image gallery, On The Web and BagsOfCrap are mainly content driven). The results are rather intersting... |
