newbie questions - method, speed, refresh 2007/08/10 08:12 Karma: 0
I've just installed this script and have a couple of questions.

1. Is the method for storing the cached files faster using the database or file?

2. I'm using OpenSEF for the rewrite on the URL's, and I have page cache set to database, and I'm getting initial page load times between 5 seconds and 220 seconds. Some pages take forever to load. Too much crunch on the database??? 3 minutes to load a page is crazy slow...

3. Some people add to my forums throughout the day, and maybe a new news article or review once a day. Is it a good idea to set the refresh time for several hours? 10800 = 3 hours?

Thanks, hopefully this will work well for me...

1. Database is faster (as long as the database is on the same server)

2. Disable PageCache, and enable Debug mode in Joomla. See how many queries are executed (and go from there)

3. You could set it high... If you use ResetList Plugins, you can set it to "-1" which will disable TTL (cache will live forever). Then, automatically when new content is saved, it'll reset the cache. If you exclude the forum from caching (if you are using Joomlaboard or Fireboard it's like that by default), then you don't need to reset on new posts...

IRCMaxwell, if you use the database for page caching, does this add to the MYSQL queries limit that the MYSQL server sees? The 50000 queries limit per hour on some shared servers can be a nightmare; was wondering if database page caching added to it. Thanks!

Yes and no... It adds when pages are being cached (3 queries I believe)... But when serving a cached page, I believe the total number executed is around 7 to 10 (without SEF enabled)... So what's better? Without caching (20 for bone stock install, or 80+ for customized), or with caching (7 to 10)...???

Thanks for your answers. Do I leave the joomla cache on or turn it off. I have it on currently, but don't want it to mess things up.

And if I set my cache time to expire in 12 hours (43200 seconds), what do I set the header expiration time to? Same?

Yeah, 12 hours should be fine for that too... Leave the default caching on. It'll help when users are logged in...
