Review of the Page Caching Component

Well, since there are several reviews floating around out there, I've decided to post a few of them

Alledia - "Its not often that a brand new, really useful and completely free Joomla component comes on the scene.   Ircmaxell has managed that with his Page Cache component."

Mambohut - "So far we're seeing a 90%+ decrease in page load times in the cached pages."

BuyHttpd - "We’re using about half of the server resources today that we were using yesterday. That’s a pretty impressive decrease."

Joomla Weekly News - "I'll be honest and say that I was pretty sceptical that any extension could really do what this one claimed to do, reduce page load times to a fraction of their current times, but it does!"

Extensions.Joomla.OrgI - "I have a very slow connection and the difference is very obvious for me. For example, a wrapped page in Joomla loads in 11seconds.... with this component it loads in 0.31sec!!! Amazing!!"

Pathos-Seo.com - It blew me away…

Seo For JoomlaI consider this one as a “must have” for the sites I build in Joomla.  Try the component, if you like it, keep it, if not… you probably did something wrong

On the web is moving to a new server!

Well, my host (for my VPS) is kicking me out!  They said that my server consumes WAY to many resources for the others on the server.  During the past few days, my server was averaging around 100 requests per second.  So, I just purchased my new server.  It's an IBM x335 series I picked up off lease for $700.  It's a dual 2.4ghz Xeon server with 2 gig ECC ram, and dual 36gb SCSI 10k RPM hard drives in a RAID 1 array.  I am planning on using CentOS Linux on this server.  In the coming weeks, I am going to detail my transition from VPS to dedicated server as it happens.  Once the server goes live, this site will be switched over to its new home!  I'm going to detail the decisions I made up to this point in this article.

Lighttpd and Joomla - A How To

If you read my other article about Lighttpd, you may be wondering how to set up a server to use Lighttpd instead of Apache.  There are really two ways to set Lighttpd up.  You can use is as a proxy to Apache (and let apache deal with dynamic pages), or use PHP as FastCGI, which is just as fast, and even more reliable.  To see what a difference Lighttpd made check this out...  The spikes are the maximum amount of page views with my server running at its resouce limit!

All About Speed - Part 2 (Generation Time)

In the second installment of this multi part series, I am going to talk about another extremely important topic when it comes to website performance.  As you can probably infer from the title, that topic is generation time.  Notice I said generation time, and not load time.  There is a VERY important difference between them.  Load time is the time it takes from when a user makes a request until the page is completely loaded (including all associated graphics and rendering).  Generation time (by my definition) is the time from when the server receives the request, until the first useful piece of content is sent.

Working with PHP and MySQL

One of the most frequent things any web programing does is work with the MySQL database.  While this can be straight forward, there are some things that can only be learned by experience.  Now, there are hundreds of articles out there about php and MySQL, I feel it's important to cover a few key points that are easily overlooked, but can make for a very bad day.  Several caveats exist in MySQL, php, and phpMyAdmin that just don't come up often.  And some of those caveats can be far worse than it may seem.  I often hear developers say "Never post process, let the database do the work for you", and while that may be good advice in the general terms, it is by no means a law.
